Jadeite and Apatite Online Consent

The Jadeite and Apatite websites have been developed as part of a research project led by Dr. Brad A. Myers at Carnegie Mellon University. The purpose of the research is to explore novel documentation tools for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). By using the websites, you agree to be part of our study about these websites.

Procedures

To accomplish our research, we need to monitor how people use the websites. This includes recording when each user logs in, what pages the user requests, and what actions the user performs on those pages. These logs are kept by the IP address of your computer.

If you create a user account, then modifications to information on the websites will be associated with your account. Such modifications will appear on the websites alongside the account username that you selected when you registered. If you do not want other people to be able to identify you from your account username, then you should select an anonymous account username. Other personal information associated with your account, such as your real name, email address, IP address, and so forth, will not appear on the websites.

When you use the websites, we administer one or more browser cookies. These help identify you and store your preferences. They are not used for advertisements.

Participant Requirements

Participation in this study is limited to individuals age 18 and older.

Risks

The risks and discomfort associated with participation in this study are no greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during other online activities.

If you create a user account, then you will be asked to select a password. The password is stored on the server in an encrypted form, but it is not encrypted during transmission from your computer to our server. Hence, it is possible for a third-party to read the password during its transmission between your computer and our server. Therefore, the password that you select must not be identical to or even similar to other passwords that you use for your other accounts, particularly accounts for which the password protects access to financial or other confidential information about you.

Guidelines for selecting a secure password can be found here: http://www.cmu.edu/iso/governance/guidelines/password-management.html

Benefits

There may be no personal benefit from your participation in the study but the knowledge received may be of value to humanity.

Compensation & Costs

There is no compensation for participation in this study.

There will be no cost to you if you participate in this study.

Confidentiality

By participating in this research, you understand and agree that Carnegie Mellon may be required to disclose your consent form, data and other personally identifiable information as required by law, regulation, subpoena or court order.

By participating, you understand and agree that the data and information gathered during this study may be used by Carnegie Mellon and published and/or disclosed by Carnegie Mellon to others outside of Carnegie Mellon. However, your username, IP address, real name, address, email address, contact information and/or other direct personal identifiers will not be mentioned in any such publication or dissemination of the research data and/or results by Carnegie Mellon.

Voluntary Participation

Your participation in this research is voluntary. You may discontinue participation at any time during the research activity.
